Things Shouldn't Be So Hard
By Kay Ryan

A life should leave
deep tracks:
ruts where she
went out and back
to get the mail
or move the hose
around the yard;
where she used to
stand before the sink,
a worn-out place;
beneath her hand
the china knobs
rubbed down to
white pastilles;
the switch she
used to feel for
in the dark
almost erased.
Her things should
keep her marks.
The passage
of a life should show;
it should abrade.
And when life stops,
a certain space--
however small--
should be left scarred
by the grand and
damaging parade.
Things shouldn't
be so hard.

Yes...Forget about Hansel & Gretel living - breadcrumbs are not enough. We should leave deep, giant ruts wherever we go.
Have a wonderful weekend, Ruben!

WOW...what a beautiful poem. I loved it and it rung so true for me.
my mind wanders a bit now
thinking of my grandparents. My sister now lives in their house , a little farm house in southern Alberta. She changed very little of it, as she wanted to basically live in the surroundings of our youth.
the days spent in that little house. The ruts and paths this poem speaks of.
Her kitchen sink, their uneven floors.
and yes, Life was hard for them.
and It is hard to have them gone.
and It is hard for me that my Son is dead.
but all of them have left little paths for us to remember them by, and smile about.
and that eases the hard.
thanks Ruben !!

Dear Ruben, Thank you for sharing this wonderful poem. I can definately relate to Wendy, having also lost a son. In eight short years, the paths he chose, the marks he left behind, will forever be engrained within us. I think it isn't enough to simply be...we need to leave our mark, we must tell a story, one that is unique. After all..everything we do, say think, really does matter. Blessings my friends, Christel
What a heartfelt and touching poem. I love it, and it's SO TRUE.
Men fear thought, as they fear nothing else on earth -- more than ruin -- more even than death.... Thought is subversive and revolutionary, destructive and terrible, thought is merciless to privilege, established institutions, and comfortable habit. Thought looks into the pit of hell and is not afraid. Thought is great and swift and free, the light of the world, and the chief glory of man.
Bertrand Russell

Dear Ruben ..... such a beautiful, thought-provoking poem! Thank-you for sharing and yes I so agree the deeper the marks the greater the life! Happy New Year to you and I can't wait to see more posts this year!
