"The Parable of the Good Muslim."

Copyright© Ruben Rivera, 16 Dec 2010

"A certain man went down from the metro-transit stop at Park Place toward the World Trade Center Memorial in Manhattan's Financial District. There he was attacked by thieves, who beat him, robbed and stripped him of his raiment, and left him dying in an alleyway.

"An evangelical happened to be going down the same road, and when he saw the man, he passed by on the other side. So too, a theologian, when he came to the place and saw him, passed by on the other side.

"But a Muslim, as she was driving by, saw the man and had compassion on him. She got out of her car and went into the alleyway at risk to her own safety. She bound his wounds to stop the bleeding. Then she put him in her car, and took him to the nearest hospital emergency room, where she told the attendants that even if the man had no health insurance, she would pay whatever she could to cover the cost of the man's medical treatment and stay at the hospital.

"Now, which of these three persons do you think was a neighbor to the man who was attacked by the robbers?"

"The One who showed him mercy."

"Go and do likewise."

An inspiring tale I will share with my children today, as we prepare our hearts and minds for the peace of Christmas and celebrate the Solstice.

Thank you!
